The second paper (1901) described the postmortem medullary. It was named after Adolf Wallenberg (1862-1949), who was a renowned Jewish neurologist and neuroanatomist who practiced in Germany. Based on the anatomical work of Duret, Wallenberg thought that the lesion was in the lateral medulla supplied by the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). Lateral medullary syndrome (LMS), also called Wallenberg syndrome or posterior inferior cerebellar artery syndrome results from a vascular event in the lateral part of the medulla oblongata.

It can be challenging to convert complex sensory and motor symptoms. Wallenberg published four papers on the syndrome. Symptoms are: ipsilateral facial numbness, ataxia and Horners syndrome contralateral arm/leg numbness, dysarthria, dysphagia, dysphonia. Although the area involved is the area supplied by the PICA, Wallenbergs syndrome is usually caused by occlusion of the VA at the level of the PICA.
